Spec

Your data, where you choose

Keep your company’s data in your own country.

Spec takes a full copy of your data out of the cloud and keeps it on a computer your company owns, in a building and a country you choose. It stays there. Nobody else holds it, and your people can search it with the internet switched off.

What “in your own country” means here

On a computer you own

  • The copy sits on a computer your company owns, in a building and a country you choose.
  • Your data stays with you, not with us. When Spec runs on your computer, your company’s data never passes through our servers.
  • You decide who can reach the computer, and where it is kept.

Nothing has to move first

  • Your app and its live database stay where they are, on AWS or wherever they run today.
  • Spec only reads. It asks for read-only access and never changes anything in your AWS account.
  • After the first copy, Spec fetches only what changed.

Spec doesn’t encrypt the copy itself. Turn on your computer’s disk encryption, and keep the computer and its backup disk locked away.

Why companies want the copy in their own country

Your data stays on a computer you control. The personal data on your own machine is still your responsibility, and your own teams and advisers decide what the law needs — Spec doesn’t make that decision for you.

The law is moving the same way

EU Data Act

The EU Data Act bans cloud switching charges from 12 January 2027, so keeping a copy of your own data gets easier, not harder.

DORA, for financial firms

EU banks, insurers and other financial firms must keep documented, tested exit plans for critical cloud services under DORA, in force since 17 January 2025. A full, checked copy of your data, kept up to date, is a large part of such a plan.

Spec isn’t a whole exit plan, and using it doesn’t make you compliant.
