Yours to keep
Your own copy of your AWS data, yours to keep.
Spec takes a full copy of your S3 files and your PostgreSQL databases onto a computer your company owns. Every file is fingerprinted, so you can re-check the copy at any time. And if you stop paying, you keep your data.
A full, checked copy — on a computer you own
- Spec copies every file out of S3, byte for byte, and your PostgreSQL databases (Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, or any Postgres), onto a computer your company owns.
- Every file gets a fingerprint as it arrives, and the whole copy gets one too, so a changed file is caught. Re-check the whole copy at any time.
- Spec only reads. It asks for read-only access and never changes anything in your AWS account.
- After the first copy, Spec fetches only what changed.
Files in Glacier or Deep Archive are listed as skipped, with the reason — never left out silently.
If you stop, you keep your data
You keep your data
- If your licence runs out, you keep your data. Reading it keeps working.
- The copy is in open formats you can read without Spec: database tables in PostgreSQL’s own COPY format with a manifest, and files exactly as they were in S3.
- Spec never deletes anything in AWS. Whether to switch anything off there is your decision.
Leaving got cheaper
- AWS says it waives data-transfer fees for customers moving their data out, on request.
- In the EU, the Data Act bans cloud switching charges from 12 January 2027.
- A 2 TB SSD costs about $100, once.
AWS’s announcement about the download fee. Compare prices, not bills: your AWS bill only goes down if you delete the data there.
What it costs
Spec for AWS costs a fifth of what AWS charges each month to keep the same data in S3 Standard, the same in every country. Work out your price.
Early access is free: we don’t take payment yet.
